Chaitra Purnima 2026: Puja Rituals

People take a sacred plunge in the Ganga River after rising early in the morning.

Devotees who cannot visit a holy place can add a few drops of Gangajal to their bathing water and take a sacred bath at home.

On this day, it is considered auspicious to offer Arghya (water) to Lord Surya.

Devotees observe the Satyanarayan Vrat and offer prayers to the Lord.

Worshipping the Moon on Purnima is very important, and devotees break their fast after offering water to the Moon.

Donating food and clothes to the underprivileged is believed to bring great merit on this day.

Some devotees also invite priests to perform hawan and Satyanarayan Puja at home, followed by distributing bhog prasad to everyone.

Chaitra Purnima 2026: Vrat Katha

On Chaitra Purnima, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe the Satyanarayan Vrat. According to the popular Vrat Katha, there once lived a poor Brahmin who was deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu but struggled with poverty. One day, a divine sage advised him to observe the Satyanarayan Vrat on the full moon day (Purnima) with complete faith and dedication.

The Brahmin followed the ritual sincerely, offered prayers, and listened to the sacred Katha. Soon, his life began to change—his financial troubles eased, and he was blessed with prosperity and happiness. Seeing his transformation, others in the village also started observing the vrat and experienced similar positive changes.

Another popular legend speaks of a merchant who promised to perform the Satyanarayan Vrat but forgot after achieving success. As a result, he faced many hardships and losses. Realizing his mistake, he performed the vrat with devotion, after which his life returned to normal, and he regained his wealth and happiness.

Chaitra Purnima 2026: Significance

Purnima is one of the most significant days in Hinduism, observed on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha every month. The Purnima that falls in the month of Chaitra is known as Chaitra Purnima.

On this sacred day, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a fast from dawn to dusk, dedicated to his form, Lord Satyanarayan, and seek divine blessings.

It is believed that during the full moon night, the divine rays of the Moon fall on Earth, and devotees sit under the moonlight to receive the blessings of Chandra Deva.

Purnima is also considered highly auspicious for taking a holy dip in the Ganga River, chanting Vishnu mantras, worshipping the Moon God, and reciting the Satyanarayan Katha.
