Chaitra Navratri 2026 will begin on March 19, marking the start of the Hindu New Year, Vikram Samvat. The nine-day festival is dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Durga and is observed with fasting, prayers and rituals across the country. Celebrated in the Hindu month of Chaitra, Navratri honours the nine manifestations of Maa Durga—from Shailputri on the first day to Siddhidatri on the ninth day. Each day of Navratri is associated with a specific colour, followed by many devotees. March 19 (Day 1) is Yellow, March 20 (Day 2) is Green, March 21 (Day 3) is Grey, March 22 (Day 4) is Orange, March 23 (Day 5) is White, March 24 (Day 6) is Red, March 25 (Day 7) is Royal blue, March 26 (Day 8) is Pink and March 27 (Day 9) is Purple.

The festival begins with Ghatasthapana, a ritual symbolising the invocation of the Goddess. Over the next nine days, devotees participate in aartis, bhajans and fasting, while also following traditional practices such as wearing the designated colours of each day. One of the key rituals is Kanya Pujan, performed on the eighth or ninth day, where young girls are worshipped as embodiments of the Goddess. The ritual highlights the importance of respecting feminine energy in society.


During Navratri, devotees are advised to maintain cleanliness in both surroundings and thoughts, stay hydrated, follow the daily colour traditions and practise patience and kindness. They are also encouraged to avoid treating fasting as a test of endurance, refrain from consuming onion, garlic and alcohol, avoid ego-driven practices and traditionally not cut hair or nails during the period.
