What is a census?
A census is the official count of every person living in the country along with details of their age, sex, education, occupation, housing and economic status. In India it is conducted once every 10 years under the Census Act, 1948. The data is used for planning welfare schemes, delimiting constituencies, allocating resources and shaping government policies. Why is Census 2027 being conducted in two phases?
To ensure accuracy and manage the massive exercise smoothly, the census is split into two phases. Phase I (Houselisting & Housing Census) collects information on housing conditions, household amenities and assets. Phase II (Population Enumeration) records individual details such as name, age, sex, caste, religion, education, occupation and migration. This phased approach allows better coverage and reduces errors.Census 2027 phases: What will be asked in each phase?
Phase I (April–September 2026): 33 questions on housing type, drinking water, toilets, electricity, cooking fuel, internet access, and assets such as vehicles, TV, computer, etc.Phase II (February 2027): Individual particulars including caste, religion, education, language, disability, occupation and fertility details for married women. Snow-bound areas of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will conduct Phase II in September 2026.
