CBSE introduces coding, financial literacy, AR, AI for students from Class VI. All you need to know

CBSE has issued a circular which shows a total of 33 subjects will be taught to students. These subjects include Financial Literacy, AR, Data Science and more.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is gearing up for yet another skill subject introduction, and this time, this is for students of class VI and VIII as well. Until now, the skill subjects were offered to students after class XI, however, this brings a change to the current curriculum.

CBSE has listed over 33 subjects that includes Coding, Data Science, Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Financial Literacy, Kashmiri Embroidery, Application of Studies, Mass Media - Being Media Literate.

"The National Education Policy-2020 has given lots of emphasis on promoting Skill education in schools. This policy aims to overcome the social status hierarchy associated with vocational education and requires integration of vocational education programmes into mainstream education in all education institutions in a phased manner," read a circular that CBSE sent to the school heads. "Beginning with vocational exposure at early ages in middle and secondary school, quality vocational education will be integrated smoothly into higher education," it added.


Therefore, NEP 2020 has put significant emphasis on promoting skill education in schools. This policy seeks to overcome social status hierarchies associated with vocational education and requires vocational education programs to be integrated into mainstream education in all institutions gradually.

According to a recent circular, NEP 2020 has outlined skill modules that will be 12-15 hours long, with 70% of the duration devoted to hands-on activities and 30% to theory.

Furthermore, the circular adds, "No fee is to be paid by the affiliated schools to CBSE for introducing any Skill Module."

Schools are advised to use "bagless days", vacation time, summer camps, or activity periods to teach these skill modules. Schools may also consider having a regular period for selective skill modules to encourage students to opt for them.
