CBSE Board Exams 2026 guidelines
As the CBSE board exams draw near, students focus on revising formulas, diagrams, and case studies. However, many still enter the examination hall confused about the permitted and prohibited items. Here’s a simple guide outlining what is allowed and what is not during the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams.

Calculators: Not Allowed (With Rare Exceptions)

For the majority of students appearing in CBSE Class 10 and 12 exams:
  • Calculators are strictly banned.
  • This rule applies to subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Accountancy, and others.
  • Scientific calculators are also not permitted.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, but only in specific cases:
  • Students with benchmark disabilities, subject to prior approval.
  • Certain vocational subjects, if officially notified.
In these situations, advance permission from CBSE through the respective school is compulsory. Students cannot make this decision independently.

Science and Maths Instruments: Permitted Items

Students are generally allowed to bring essential geometry tools, such as:
  • Transparent ruler
  • Compass
  • Divider
  • Protractor
  • Pencil (for diagrams and graphs)
  • Eraser and sharpener

Geography Maps: Provided by CBSE

A common misconception is that students need to carry maps from home. As per CBSE guidelines:
  • Required outline maps are supplied along with the question paper.
  • Students must carefully mention their roll number on the map sheet, if instructed.
  • The map sheet should be securely tied inside the answer booklet before submission.

Graph Paper: Supplied at the Exam Centre

For subjects like Mathematics, Economics, or Physics:
  • Graph paper is typically provided by the examination centre when required.
  • Students should not bring their own graph sheets.

Important Presentation Guidelines

Many students overlook basic writing and presentation rules. Keep these in mind:
  • Use a pencil only for diagrams and graphs.
  • Write answers using a blue or royal blue pen (avoid smudge-prone gel pens).
  • Do not use correction fluid.
  • If correcting an error, strike it out neatly.
  • Ensure supplementary sheets are properly attached.
