The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant overhaul in the exam pattern for the 2026 Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, aiming to reduce reliance on rote memorisation and encourage deeper conceptual learning. The change is expected to enhance students’ analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and long-term understanding of subjects rather than short-term recall.

Shift from Rote Learning to Competency-Based Assessment
To align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE has redesigned the question paper format. From 2026 onward:
  • 50% of questions will be competency-based, including MCQs, case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, data interpretation, and situational problems.
  • 20% of the paper will include select-response (MCQ) questions.
  • The remaining 30% will be constructed-response questions comprising short and long answers.
This means half of every exam will focus on testing conceptual understanding and application of knowledge rather than memorised information.

Two Board Exams for Class 10 Starting 2026

As recommended in NEP 2020, CBSE will introduce two board examinations in a year for Class 10 students, offering greater flexibility and opportunities to improve performance and demonstrate learning outcomes.
