Commuters complained of long queues and delays at Delhi Metro today as several users reported increased security measures ahead of Republic Day celebrations at Metro stations. The long waits, attributed to enhanced security checks and "low manpower of the CISF," disrupted commutes, especially for office workers. Queues stretched outside several stations, causing frustration among commuters who were caught off guard by the unannounced delays.

Delays Anger Delhi Metro Commuters

Frustrated commuters took to social media to express their discontent. Many criticised the lack of communication from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) about the additional delays. One commuter posted, “*** DMRC itni lambi line security check pe fir late karwa diya aaj (the long queues have again caused a delay).”

Another commuter, Ashish, shared a video of the situation at Dwarka Sector 10 Metro station. He commented, “CISF is saying they can’t do anything as the manpower is very less. Such a ridiculous arrangement by Delhi Metro… not at all expected.”

Reasons Behind the Long Queues

The enhanced security measures were implemented ahead of Republic Day celebrations, a common practice in Delhi. However, commuters pointed out the lack of planning behind these measures. “Every time near January 26th and August 15th, they wake up and start deep checking without any preparation, causing people to suffer,” a user wrote on X.

The situation was not limited to Dwarka. Commuters at Noida’s Sector 52 metro station also reported long waits. “Half of Delhi NCR’s population relies on the metro, yet commuters are forced to maintain lines from the main road,” said a commuter.

Impact on Daily Travel

Regular metro users, particularly officegoers, found the delays unmanageable. Abhishek Gupta, a corporate worker, said, “We use Delhi Metro to avoid traffic. This is the peak hour to travel for corporate life. We all know Republic Day is near, but we can’t afford these delays.”

Calls for Improved Planning

Commuters have demanded better planning and an increase in train frequency during such events. While tightened security around national celebrations is appreciated, many believe it should not come at the cost of commuter convenience. The DMRC has yet to issue an official statement addressing the concerns raised by passengers.
