Activision Blizzard has announced that the multiplayer mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be available for free this week. Players will have access to the ongoing season 3 content, which includes the Pelayo's Lighthouse arena, the 2v2 Gunfight mode, classic multiplayer modes, and more. The free trial will be available from April 19 at 9:30 pm IST/5 pm BST until April 26, on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X. It is worth noting that if players decide to upgrade to the full MW2 game or the battle-royale tie-in Warzone 2.0, all their multiplayer progress will be carried over.

On April 12, the third season began, introducing new operators, a battle pass, and a new Gulag arena to the battle royale mode. The new map, called Blacksite, is also featured in the 2v2 Gunfight mode that was first introduced in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019. In Gunfight, players are placed in team-based matches with randomized weapon load outs and must win six rounds before their opponents. Additionally, during the free multiplayer week, players will have access to Alley, Shipment, and Exhibit maps that will be part of the Gunfight mode rotation.

Two new multiplayer maps, Black Gold and Pelayo's Lighthouse, were introduced in season 3 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, only Pelayo's Lighthouse will be available during the free access period. This map features a small, stormy island with a central guiding lighthouse surrounded by maintenance buildings, a boat dock, and a helipad. The map includes rocky elevations that can provide an advantage, while the "Main Building" offers a tight, close-quarter combat experience. Players can also take advantage of the raging waves to move around stealthily and eliminate enemies with a surprise attack.

During the free multiplayer week, players will have access to various 6v6 game modes, such as Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Domination, Kill Confirmed, Grind, Gun Game, Infected, All or Nothing, and One in the Chamber. They can also play across 10 MW2 maps in 12 different game modes, excluding the Santa Seña map, which is exclusively reserved for Invasion and Ground War modes. Additionally, there is an "additional download" required for accessing the free multiplayer, with varying sizes based on the platform used.

In February, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II introduced its Ranked Play mode, following the rules of the Call of Duty League (CDL). The transition to season 3 was delayed by a day but has now been updated with new restrictions. Previously, the SPW 40MM Drill attachment and specific FJX Ammunition Types were appearing unrestricted in custom load outs. Although players need to be at least level 16 to participate in Ranked Play, all weapons and attachments are automatically unlocked to maintain a level playing field.

Starting on April 19 at 9:30 pm IST/5 pm BST, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have a free multiplayer week available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
