CA Day 2022: What you need to know about its history and significance

Annually on 1st July, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) celebrates the anniversary of the formation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. For accounting and auditing professions in India, the ICAI is the only licensing and regulatory body. As recommended by the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), accounting standards are mandatory for all finance and accounting organisations.

History
In India before independence, the British administration had accounting standards based on the Companies Act. Initially, auditors assigned to the task were expected to be certified, but as the accounting profession became unregulated, certification morphed into various degrees and led to some confusion. In 1948, after India gained independence, an expert committee recommended that independent associations for accountants should be created to oversee the profession. The Indian government accepted this recommendation. The Indian Parliament subsequently passed an act creating the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) as a statutory body. ICAI was then established on 1st July 1949.


Significance
The ICAI is an institute responsible for regulating the accounting standards in India, and the CAs play an important role in the functioning and development of the country.
