BJP MP Tejasvi Surya allegedly opens emergency exit of IndiGo flight

Surya, who was flying from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli for the executive meeting of Tamil Nadu BJYM with state BJP president K Annamalai, was permitted to board the same plane after an "apology letter,"

IANSHINDI
Tejasvi Surya, national head of the BJP Yuva Morcha and the party's MP from Bengaluru South, reportedly unlocked the emergency evacuation door of an IndiGo plane before takeoff on December 10, last year, at the Chennai airport.

Following media reports on the event, the airline issued a statement on Tuesday, more than a month later. Surya was identified in the reports, but IndiGo did not name anybody in their response.

Surya, who was flying from Chennai to Tiruchirapalli for the executive meeting of Tamil Nadu BJYM with state BJP president K Annamalai, was permitted to board the same plane after an "apology letter," As a result, doubts have been raised about whether IndiGo and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) followed the rule book, which states that opening the emergency door is a "punishable crime."

Aviation experts also wanted to know how a passenger who jeopardised the safety of others was allowed off the hook and why it took authorities over a month to make the event public. They also remembered that others who had previously opened the emergency exits had been arrested by law enforcement.

The flight was set to depart at 10.05 a.m. Surya and Annamalai were seated near the emergency exit door. Surya allegedly pushed the emergency escape door release lever as the flight staff was educating passengers on the safety routine.

The emergency exit door allegedly opened while the plane was taxiing for departure. Passengers were deboarded in accordance with protocol, and the aircraft took off only after a thorough check. The plane finally took off from Chennai at 12.27 p.m. and arrived at Tiruchirapalli at 1.23 p.m.
