BJD has nominated 3 newcomers namely, Sulata Deo, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, Niranjan Bishi who would be Rajya Sabha members of parliament from July 1st, 2022. Apart from them, Sasmit Patra would be in his second innings having represented Odisha in the previous term as the Chief Whip of the BJD in the Upper House. This announcement from the BJD was made on the occasion of the 3rd anniversary of the 5th Tenure of the Navin Patnaik Government.

Sasmit when contacted was thankful to BJD President and Honourable Chief Minister of Odisha, Shree Navin Patnaik, and promised to continue to represent Odisha dutifully for the next five years. Polling is to be held on the 10th of June as per the Election Commission and the bypoll for the seat vacated by Shri Subhas Singh of the BJD will be held on the 13th of June.

Shri Subhash Singhji had resigned as the MP to the upper house as he is to occupy the mayoral seat of Cuttack after the success of the municipal elections held there. Elections would happen between 9 am to 4 pm and results would be declared on the same day after the conclusion of the polls. Unnamed sources informed that the BJD will bag all four seats to the Upper House unopposed as the opposition BJP and Congress will not be fielding any candidate from their stables this time round.

It is important to note here that the BJD has an outright majority in the Odisha Assembly. The 147 member Odisha Assembly has 113 BJD MLAs, the BJP has 22 and Congress has 9 MLAs.
