Bihar woman travelling without ticket in AC first class caught with 75 litres of liquor, police says father, sister also caught earlier in similar offenses

A 25-year-old woman, Neha Jha, was arrested along with her relative Ishan Kumar at Samastipur Junction after Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel allegedly recovered around 75 litres of foreign liquor, worth about Rs 1.5 lakh, from a locked First AC compartment on a train travelling from New Delhi to Bihar. Police said the liquor was allegedly being transported from Haryana, while Jha claimed during initial questioning that it was meant for a wedding at her home in December, as TOI report.

The video attracted attention because of Jha’s apparent composure during the interaction. She spoke to officials in fluent English and remained calm while the compartment was searched. The incident, however, has resulted in a police case over the alleged illegal transportation of liquor.

What happened inside the First AC coach

Jha had travelled around 1,100km from New Delhi to Bihar in the H-1 First AC coach with her relative Ishan Kumar. The berth had been booked in Kumar’s name, while police alleged that Jha was travelling without a ticket.

When the train reached Samastipur Junction, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) went to the compartment after finding its door locked from inside. Following repeated knocks, Jha opened the door, after which officials recorded their interaction.

A subsequent search allegedly resulted in the recovery of around 75 litres of foreign liquor. Police estimated the consignment’s value at about Rs 1.5 lakh. Jha and Kumar were arrested and later sent to judicial custody.

Police probe Jha’s background and alleged destination

Jha is from Bari village in the area under Singhia police station in Darbhanga. She is the youngest of four sisters and is reported to have graduated from KS College in Darbhanga.

She spent part of her education in Darbhanga, where police are now examining her contacts as part of their investigation into where the alleged liquor consignment was intended to be taken.

Birbal Kumar, SHO of Rail Samastipur and the investigating officer, said Jha made a claim during initial questioning about why she was allegedly transporting the liquor, TOI reported.

“During initial questioning, Neha reportedly claimed that she was transporting the liquor from Haryana for a wedding that will take place at her home in Dec,” he said.

An FIR was filed against Jha and Kumar under the Prohibition Act, the SHO said. Police are verifying her claim and investigating whether the stated reason was genuine or was being used to explain the alleged transportation of liquor.

Family members previously named in liquor cases

Jha’s family background has also come under scrutiny during the investigation.

According to police sources, her father, Sanjay Kumar Jha, was arrested in a liquor-related case nearly two years ago. Her elder sister, Nishu Jha, was arrested by the excise department on November 30, 2025, after she was allegedly found carrying 21 litres of foreign liquor.

The family also has two sons. One is still studying in school, while the other reportedly underwent treatment at a de-addiction centre in Muzaffarpur after developing a drug habit following failure in the NEET.

Police examine phones, WhatsApp conversations

The investigation has now expanded beyond the alleged recovery from the train compartment. Police have seized the mobile phones belonging to Jha and Kumar and are examining their call detail records and WhatsApp conversations.

Sources said Jha’s phone contained numbers belonging to several doctors and prominent businessmen in Darbhanga. Investigators are examining the contacts and conversations to determine whether any of them are connected to the alleged movement of the liquor.

The police are also continuing to verify Jha’s explanation that the liquor was being transported from Haryana for a wedding at her home in December.
