In a shocking case of superstition-led crime, the family members of 62-year-old Mohammad Kalimuddin allegedly burned him to death at Dulali village under the Bahadurganj police station area of Bihar's Kishanganj district on Tuesday evening.

"One of his sons told us that they burned him to death as it would fill their home with gold and precious jewels," Bahadurganj police station sub-inspector Pushpa Kumari told TOI on Wednesday, describing it as a case of superstition. She said all the family members appeared "mentally sick".

Another police officer told TOI that the family members of the deceased were influenced by a local godman. It was their superstition that led to this heinous act, as they were told that Kalimuddin owned a hidden treasure full of gold and precious jewels.

The family members coerced the victim to reveal the location of the hidden treasure, but when Kalimuddin denied having any knowledge about it, they lost their temper and wrapped him in used clothes. Later on, they set him on fire after pouring petrol. The victim's screams alerted the villagers, and they tried to save him, but then it was too late. The police have sent the body for a postmortem.
