Cricket Australia (CA) is reportedly exploring the possibility of staging a Big Bash League (BBL) match in India next season, with Chennai’s iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium emerging as a preferred venue.

According to a report cited by Press Trust of India (PTI), the proposal is still at a preliminary stage. However, discussions have already taken place between CA representatives and officials of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).

Cricket Australia’s Strategy to Tap the Indian Market

The potential move is understood to be part of CA’s broader strategy to integrate the lucrative Indian cricket market more closely with the BBL. This comes amid expectations of a near-certain sale of at least two of the league’s eight franchises.

As per the report, CA’s Head of Business Operations Phil Rigby and Head of Competition Development and Strategy Margot Harley recently travelled to India to explore the logistics of hosting an offshore BBL fixture, possibly in Chennai.

A senior TNCA office bearer confirmed the discussions to PTI but stressed that the idea remains in its infancy.

“Yes, two representatives came from Cricket Australia. Senior office-bearers were part of the discussions where the possibility of one BBL game per season was discussed. They have heard good things about MA Chidambaram Stadium and did a recce. However, we are not the only venue they are looking at. TNCA cannot commit unless we get a directive from the BCCI,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

The final decision would rest with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which would need to approve the proposal.

Could Perth Scorchers Play in India?

The report suggests that Perth Scorchers could be a logical choice to feature in India. Their time zone alignment and reported openness from Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) officials to explore offers from Indian investors make them a viable candidate.

However, several stakeholders, including broadcasters and the BCCI, would need to grant approval before any deal is finalised.

Why the BBL’s India Move Matters

The Big Bash League is widely regarded as one of the premier T20 competitions in world cricket. The Perth Scorchers are its most successful franchise, having lifted the title six times.

Hosting a BBL match in India, particularly at Chepauk, would mark a historic shift for the Australian league and potentially deepen commercial ties between Australian and Indian cricket.

For now, all eyes remain on the BCCI’s stance as discussions continue behind the scenes.
