In a bizarre case from Bhubaneswar, police have uncovered a shocking plot allegedly devised by a local woman entrepreneur to stage gunfire and a bomb explosion at her own residence — all to strengthen her claim of being under threat and secure a gun licence.

According to officials, 38-year-old Ghunguru Misra is accused of masterminding the fake attack. She is currently absconding, while three of her associates — Debasis Mohapatra (24), Santosh Mahakud (25), and her driver Chandan Nayak (27), who already has a criminal background — have been arrested.

The investigation began after Misra filed two complaints, one on September 11 and another on October 5, alleging that unidentified men had attacked her house in Bhubaneswar’s Bharatpur area. CCTV footage from her property reportedly showed incidents of bomb hurling and gunfire on the nights of September 10 and October 4. Misra had publicly accused the police of negligence, claimed threats to her life, and demanded a firearm licence for her protection.

However, police later discovered that Misra had applied for a gun licence months before these alleged attacks occurred. During questioning, the arrested trio confessed that the incidents had been staged at Misra’s direction.

Commissioner of Police S. Dev Datta Singh stated that Misra’s primary motive was to fabricate a life-threatening scenario to expedite her firearm licence approval. “She seemed eager to project a sense of power in her locality,” Singh said, adding that police teams are now tracking her whereabouts.

Authorities confirmed that her gun licence application will be rejected due to the fraudulent acts. Police also criticized her for spreading unnecessary panic and disturbing public order. An unlicensed firearm and several bullets, reportedly provided by Misra, were seized from the accused.
