BharOS: Vaishnaw, Pradhan test 'Made In India' mobile operating system developed by IIT Madras
Android and iOS have dominated the mobile OS category, but in recent years, various new indigenous operating systems have emerged that have the potential to challenge Android. One such indigenous mobile operating system created by an Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)-incubated startup is said to help India's 100 million mobile phone customers.

This software, known as 'BharOS,' may be loaded on commercially available devices. It is supposed to create a safe environment for users and to contribute significantly to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat.' BharOS Services are now supplied to organisations with strong privacy and security requirements, whose users handle sensitive information that necessitates secret interactions via limited mobile apps. Such consumers demand private cloud services delivered via private 5G networks.

JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) created the BharOS, which was incubated by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a Section 8 (Not for Profit) Company formed by IIT Madras.

There are no default apps in BharOS (NDA). This implies that consumers are not compelled to utilise apps with which they are unfamiliar or who they do not trust. Furthermore, this technique gives consumers more control over the permissions that applications have on their device, since they may limit access to particular functionalities or data on their device to apps they trust.

BharOS gives users access to trusted apps from company-specific Private App Store Services (PASS). A PASS grants access to a selected selection of apps that have been extensively verified and have satisfied particular organisational security and privacy criteria. This means that consumers can be certain that the applications they are installing are safe to use and have been thoroughly vetted for possible security flaws or privacy problems.
