This isn't the first time Ashneer Grover has expressed pride in his wife's tax-paying prowess. Merely three months ago, he had declared her to be among the top individual female taxpayers in India, an achievement that spanned over multiple years. Additionally, Grover took the opportunity to criticize venture capitalists who, in his opinion, evade taxes by residing in tax-friendly countries like Singapore or Dubai.
Despite the triumphant announcement, the backdrop is marred with the ongoing BharatPe row that led to Ashneer Grover's resignation as the company's managing director in the preceding April. Madhuri Jain Grover, too, faced termination from her position as head of controls at BharatPe, following allegations of fund misappropriation.
The situation escalated further when BharatPe sought legal intervention by summoning the Grovers to the Delhi High Court. The company accused the family of orchestrating a "vicious and vitriolic campaign" against them. Among the allegations were the creation of counterfeit invoices, involvement of fictitious vendors providing services to the company, and excessive charges for recruitment services. In response, the fintech unicorn sought damages of up to Rs 88 crore from the Grovers.
Notably, in March 2022, it had been reported that Ashneer Grover himself paid an impressive sum of Rs 7.1 crore as advance tax for the assessment year 2022-23, while his wife, Madhuri Jain Grover, contributed Rs 1.1 crore in advance tax.
