The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and Pakistan Army are engaged in multiple counter-terrorism operations in the restive Balochistan province with the BLA claiming 200 killed in attacks. As if this was not enough, Pakistan's cricket team will boycott its T20 World Cup league match against India on February 15, a social media post suggesting a cricket match between India and Balochistan has emerged. A post made by Baloch representative and freelance journalist Mir Yar Baloch propagated the idea of flags of Bharat and Balochistan together during the upcoming World Cup matches. "Brave patriots, Are you ready to proudly hoist these two beautiful flags of Bharat and Balochistan together during the upcoming World Cup matches?," the post on X read.

Baloch Army vs Pakistan intensifies

The post comes at a time when a series of gun and bomb attacks have rattled Pakistan's south-western Balochistan province. The BLA has claimed that its Operation Herof Phase II ran for over 40 hours across multiple districts, leaving more than 200 Pakistani Army, police and Frontier Corps personnel dead in less than two days. This marks an escalation of violence in the impoverished but resource-rich province, where Pakistan's government has been battling an ethnic insurgency for decades. The BLA claimed it launched a coordinated operation dubbed Herof, or "black storm", targeting security forces across the province.

According to news agency Reuters, attackers dressed as ordinary civilians entered hospitals, schools, banks and markets on Saturday before opening fire, Pakistan's junior interior minister Talal Chaudhry said. "In each case, the attackers came in dressed as civilians and indiscriminately targeted ordinary people working in shops," he said.

The BLA has accused Pakistan's federal government of exploiting the rich mineral resources of its largest province without the local population benefiting. Local activists also blame Pakistani security forces for enforced disappearances, which Islamabad denies.

The Pakistan Army said it launched counter-terrorism operations after members of the ethnic Baloch group carried out attacks at several locations on Saturday. The army said the they attempted to disturb peace by carrying out terrorist activities in and around Quetta, Mastung, Nushki, Dalbandin, Kharan, Panjgur, Tump, Gwadar and Pasni.

Pak to boycott India match at T20 World Cup

Pakistan will not take the field against India in the group stage fixture of the T20 World Cup on February 15. While Pakistan govt didn’t provide any reason for the move, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi had warned of drastic steps after Bangladesh was replaced with Scotland on January 24. “The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026, however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February against India,” said a post on X (Formerly Twitter).

The International Cricket Council (ICC) reacted sharply to development, stating: “ICC hopes PCB will consider the significant and long-term implications for cricket in its own country as this is likely to impact the global cricket ecosystem, which it is itself a member and beneficiary of.”

“The ICC notes the statement that the govt of Pakistan has made regarding the decision to instruct its national team to selectively participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. While the ICC awaits official communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board, this position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule,” an ICC statement said.

Sources told TOI that ICC could contemplate expelling Pakistan from the World Cup and future ICC tournaments if the PCB goes ahead with boycotting the scheduled match against India.
