Bhadrapada Amavasya 2026: Date, timings, puja rituals and significance of Pithori Amavasya

Pithori Amavasya 2026 will be observed on September 10. The day is considered significant for devotees who observe the Pithori Amavasya vrat and is traditionally associated with motherhood, children, family well-being and ancestral remembrance.

According to the Panchang timings for New Delhi, the Amavasya Tithi begins at 10:33 AM on September 10 and ends at 8:56 AM on September 11. Since the Amavasya Tithi falls during Pradosh Kaal on Thursday, September 10, the Pithori Amavasya vrat will be observed on the same day.

Why is Pithori Amavasya celebrated?

Pithori Amavasya is closely associated with family happiness and motherhood. Mothers traditionally observe the vrat and pray for the health, protection and long life of their children.


The observance is also linked to the preservation of family lineage and peace within the household. It falls in the month of Bhadrapada according to the Purnimanta calendar.

In Maharashtra and Gujarat, where the Amanta calendar is generally followed, the corresponding observance is associated with Shravana Amavasya. Depending on regional traditions, it is also known as Matru Amavasya or Pola Amavasya.

Why is it called Pithori Amavasya?

The name Pithori is linked to the traditional ritual associated with the festival. Traditional interpretations connect “Pithori” with “pishta”, meaning flour or ground grain.

During the vrat, symbolic figures associated with the 64 Yoginis, Goddess Pithori and the Sapta Matrikas may be made from flour and worshipped.

The Sapta Matrikas traditionally include Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamunda.

This ritual is one of the features that distinguishes Pithori Amavasya from the usual monthly Amavasya observance.

Pithori Amavasya 2026 puja rituals

The day generally begins with a bath followed by a Sankalpa, or a formal resolve to observe the vrat.

The main worship is performed during Pradosh Kaal while the Amavasya Tithi is active. This is why the Pithori Amavasya vrat will be observed on September 10 rather than the following morning.

Devotees may worship Goddess Pithori and the Matrikas with roli, turmeric, akshat, flowers, incense and a diya. Traditional offerings include puri, kheer, jaggery, ghee and other flour-based preparations.

The Pithori Vrat Katha may also be recited after the main puja. However, household rituals can differ, as customs vary across families and regions.

Ancestor worship on Bhadrapada Amavasya

Amavasya is also traditionally associated with Pitru Tarpan and Shraddha rituals. Depending on family customs, devotees may honour deceased ancestors by offering food, water or performing charitable acts.

Amavasya days are considered significant for remembering and honouring ancestors. Pithori Amavasya therefore brings together several themes — motherhood, children, family continuity and remembrance of ancestors.
