The airport connection is part of the larger Blue Line being built along Bengaluru’s traffic-heavy Outer Ring Road. The corridor will connect major employment hubs and residential areas before extending northwards towards the airport.
Why is Bengaluru’s airport Metro taking so long?
The Blue Line has faced several construction and integration challenges. One of the key challenges is the section between Hebbal and Kempapura, where BMRCL is constructing infrastructure capable of accommodating four Metro tracks. The design will allow the Blue Line to integrate with the proposed Orange Line in the future.
Officials said a specialised three-pier portal structure is being built along about 1 km between Hebbal and Kempapura to accommodate the four tracks. It will be the first such configuration on Namma Metro’s mainline network.
Construction along the Outer Ring Road has also been complicated by heavy traffic, utility-related issues, land constraints and station construction challenges.
From airport cabs to driverless Metro
The Blue Line will also introduce driverless Metro technology to Bengaluru. Its trains are equipped with automated control and safety systems and will undergo extensive testing before passenger services begin. For airport travellers, however, the biggest change could be much simpler: having the option to leave the car or cab behind.
Once the Hebbal-KIA stretch opens, passengers from several parts of Bengaluru will be able to take the Metro to the airport, with connectivity expected to improve further as the remaining sections of the Blue Line become operational.
Bengaluru airport passenger fee cut by 45%
Domestic air passengers flying out of Bengaluru will pay significantly less in airport user charges from September 1, with the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) fixing the User Development Fee (UDF) at Rs 300 per departing passenger for the five-year period through March 2031.The revised fee is 45% lower than the existing Rs 550 and also below the Rs 450 proposed by airport operator Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL). The reduction is particularly significant for Bengaluru, where domestic travellers account for about 84% of total passenger traffic.
For departing international passengers, the UDF has been set at Rs 997, compared with the existing Rs 1,500 and BIAL's proposed Rs 1,215, AERA said in a release on Friday. The regulator's decision comes as part of the fourth control period, which runs from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2031. However, the revised UDF will be levied from September 1, 2026.
