The formation, known as the Peninsular Gneiss, stands inside Lalbagh Botanical Garden and has been declared a National Geological Monument by the Geological Survey of India. Most people who visit the garden walk past it without a second thought.
Older than almost everything
To put the number in context: the Himalayas are roughly 50 million years old. Dinosaurs appeared around 230 million years ago. This rock in Lalbagh is 3.4 billion years old, which makes it approximately 70 times older than the Himalayas and far older than any animal that has ever walked the Earth.
The Earth itself formed around 4.5 billion years ago. When this rock took shape during the Archean Eon, the planet was barely recognisable. The atmosphere was a toxic mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. Oxygen had not yet formed. Volcanic activity was widespread, and complex life was still billions of years away.
Rocks from this period are rare. Those that remain exposed on the surface today are rarer still.
How scientists dated it
The rock's age was determined through zircon crystals found within it. These crystals are exceptionally durable and can survive extreme heat and pressure for billions of years while retaining chemical signatures that allow scientists to calculate when the rock originally formed.
The result placed the Lalbagh outcrop among the earliest surviving material from Earth's original crust.
What the rock is made of and why it looks the way it does
The Lalbagh rock is not granite, though it is often mistaken for one. It is a metamorphic rock, meaning it was not formed by cooling lava but by existing rock being buried kilometres underground and subjected to temperatures exceeding 600 degrees Celsius.
Under that kind of heat and pressure, the minerals inside were stretched, compressed, and rearranged into distinct light and dark bands. Those bands are still visible across the rock today, a record of forces that acted on it deep beneath the surface billions of years ago. Over time, the softer layers above eroded away, leaving this resilient block exposed.
How did an ancient rock end up in Bengaluru?
The location of the Lalbagh rock today does not represent where it has always been.
Over hundreds of millions of years, tectonic plate movements changed the position of land masses across Earth. The region that now forms southern India was once part of the supercontinent Gondwana.
Slow geological movements carried this landmass through different positions on the planet, eventually shaping the landscape where Bengaluru stands today.
Around 300 million years ago, this land was part of Gondwana, a supercontinent that stretched toward what is now Antarctica. Slow movement of tectonic plates carried it northward over millions of years. That same drift eventually contributed to the collision that raised the Himalayas.
The rock has, in a very literal sense, travelled across the Earth.
History layered on top of geology
Human beings have been connected to this rock for a long time as well. Excavations near the outcrop in 1932 uncovered prehistoric burial sites containing large pottery urns with rounded projections at their base, pointing to a local burial tradition that once existed in the area.
Centuries later, in 1537, founder Kempe Gowda chose this hillock as the site for one of his four famous watchtowers to mark the boundaries of what would become Bengaluru. He had no way of knowing he was planting a flag in a piece of rock older than almost everything on Earth.
What lives on it today
The rock supports a small and fragile ecosystem. Soil and moisture collect in its cracks, allowing grasses, mosses, and lichens to grow across the surface. Those lichens also serve as indicators of local air quality. The rock also provides a habitat for the Peninsular rock agama, a lizard species that blends with the rocky surface.
Graffiti and plastic waste, both common problems at the site, damage this ecosystem and the rock itself.
A reminder hiding in plain sight
Bengaluru is a city that rarely stops moving. New offices go up, new roads get laid, and the conversation is almost always about what comes next. The Lalbagh rock does not participate in any of that. It has simply been there, through shifting continents, mass extinctions, the rise of oxygen, the arrival of life, and the building of a city around it.
It is the oldest thing most Bengalureans will ever stand next to, and it is open to visitors every single day.
