A Zomato shift manager was accused of telling Kannada-speaking workers to learn Hindi

A Zomato warehouse shift manager in Karnataka has been booked after allegedly telling workers to learn Hindi if they wanted to continue working with him, a TOI report stated. The manager, identified as 31-year-old Ashok Muttayy of Malapalli in Andhra Pradesh, later apologised after Kannada activists protested outside the warehouse and police registered a suo motu case. Ashok works as a shift manager at a warehouse in Madanayakanahalli near Nelamangala. The facility has been rented by Zomato, police said.

'If you want to work with me, learn Hindi': Employee records the Manager's order

The incident reportedly took place last week after Ashok reprimanded some workers over an official matter. The workers then asked him to communicate in Kannada, saying they could not understand what he was saying. Ashok allegedly responded that he did not know Kannada and spoke only Hindi. A worker recorded the exchange, and the video later circulated widely. In the recording, Ashok is heard saying, “‘If you all (workers and other staffers) want to work with me, learn Hindi. Else, you can leave and go. I am not bothered’.” The remark triggered a reaction among local Kannada groups.

Kannada activists protest outside warehouse

After the video spread, a group of Kannada activists gathered outside the warehouse on Sunday. They demanded action against Ashok over his alleged remarks to the workers. Police subsequently registered a suo motu case and filed a petition against the warehouse manager.

Manager apologises

Following police intervention, Ashok apologised over the incident. The case comes after a workplace disagreement escalated into a dispute over the language employees and their manager used to communicate. Police have taken action based on the incident and the complaint arising from the episode.
