A viral social media post comparing the earnings of private school teachers and domestic workers in Bengaluru has triggered a debate over school fees, teacher salaries and what parents actually receive for the money they spend on education. The post, shared by a finance content creator, highlights a striking comparison: private school teachers in the city may earn around ₹30,000 a month, while domestic workers employed in affluent housing societies can sometimes make more. The post also shared a podcast video carrying the caption, "Don't send your kids to expensive schools."

'There is no best education in India'

The video challenges a familiar pitch made by parents when choosing a school: My child will get the best education. It questions whether the features that make a private school look attractive necessarily mean children are receiving better education.


The discussion points to the things parents often notice while visiting schools, impressive buildings, good food, well-presented teachers, attractive boards and signage, bright lighting and an English-speaking environment.


It also takes aim at the way schools showcase children during annual day programmes, suggesting that these visible features can create an impression of quality without necessarily proving the quality of education being delivered in classrooms.

The argument is not that schools should not provide good infrastructure or facilities. Instead, the video questions whether these features have become a substitute for what should remain the main purpose of a school, teaching children well.

The teacher question

The video then shifts the focus from school buildings to the people responsible for teaching children. It questions about who are choosing teaching as a profession in India and whether teaching is genuinely the first career choice for enough people. The answer offered in the video is blunt: "No."

That point connects directly with the debate around teacher salaries. If schools charge parents lakhs of rupees every year but teachers receive comparatively modest salaries, the question becomes whether the education system is attracting and retaining the best talent.

What the salary numbers show

Salary data indicates that the ₹30,000 figure used in the discussion is possible but does not represent every teacher in Bengaluru. Reports puts the average monthly salary of a school teacher in Bengaluru at around ₹23,700, while the Karnataka average is around ₹20,600.

Experienced teachers at some private schools can earn more than ₹30,000, while those starting out may earn considerably less.

Domestic workers also have different income levels depending on their working hours and responsibilities. Full-time housekeeping staff in affluent parts of Bengaluru can earn around ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, with income increasing when cooking, cleaning and childcare are combined.

Why parents are paying lakhs in fees

Private school fees in Bengaluru can range from about ₹1 lakh a year to several lakh rupees, while premium and international schools can charge considerably more. For parents, the attraction can include English-medium education, infrastructure, extracurricular activities, technology, food, transport and a particular school environment.

But the video asks parents to look beyond these visible features and question what their children are actually learning.

In other words, a school may look impressive when a parent walks through its campus, but that alone does not establish whether students are receiving a strong education.

Social media users divided

The salary comparison has attracted different reactions online. Some users argue that domestic help commands higher pay because reliable workers are difficult to find and retain in Bengaluru. Others believe schools should explain why high fees do not always result in substantially better salaries for teachers.

Another group has questioned the comparison itself, pointing out that teaching and domestic work are different professions and cannot be judged only by monthly income.

One commenter summed up that view by saying: "people pay what they feel they need in the moment, not according to someone's degree."

Bengaluru has seen similar teacher salary debates

The latest discussion comes after another social media post last month claimed that a kindergarten teacher in Bengaluru had been offered a salary of ₹6,000 a month. That claim also triggered an online debate about teacher pay and the cost of living in the city.

Concerns over salaries, working hours and responsibilities have been raised by teachers in private unaided schools for years. Some educators eventually move to government jobs, coaching centres or other education-related roles in search of better or more predictable earnings.

The bigger question for parents

The viral discussion ultimately puts the spotlight on something bigger than the salary of one profession. Parents often choose expensive schools because they want the best possible future for their children. But the video asks whether a high fee automatically means high-quality education.

A large campus, attractive facilities, English-speaking staff and polished annual-day events may influence a parent's decision. Yet the quality of teaching remains much harder to measure from a school visit.That is why the debate has struck a chord. The question is no longer simply whether a Bengaluru school teacher earns more or less than a domestic worker.
