Bengaluru Pink Line Metro opening date update: When will Namma Metro’s new line start operations?

Bengaluru’s much-awaited Pink Line Metro is expected to open for passengers in September 2026, but the exact inauguration date has not been announced yet. The 7.5-km elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere is ready for operations, according to officials, with the project awaiting the remaining statutory clearances and confirmation of an inauguration date from the Centre.

The opening will give commuters in south Bengaluru another Metro option, particularly those travelling along the busy Bannerghatta Road corridor. Once this section starts commercial services, the city’s Metro network will cross the 100-km mark.

Bengaluru Pink Line opening date

As of now, there is no confirmed public opening date for the Pink Line. Karnataka Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said after inspecting the corridor that the state government was hopeful of getting an inauguration date from the Union government during September. The trial run and inspection of the 7.5-km stretch have already been carried out.


Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has completed work on the elevated section, but passenger services can begin only after the required approvals are in place. The Railway Board’s approval relating to the rolling stock and the safety clearance process involving the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) are among the remaining steps.

So, for commuters waiting for the Pink Line, the current status is simple: September 2026 is the expected opening month, not a confirmed inauguration date.

Bengaluru Pink Line Metro: Which stations will open first?

The first operational section will cover around 7.5 km and is expected to serve six stations. The stations on this stretch include:

• Hulimavu
• IIM Bangalore
• JP Nagar 4th Phase
• Jayadeva Hospital
• Tavarekere

The Jayadeva Hospital station is particularly important because it will provide an interchange with the existing Yellow Line, giving passengers an additional connection across the Bengaluru Metro network.

Bengaluru Pink Line route: Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara

The Pink Line is much bigger than the section that is about to open. The complete corridor will run from Kalena Agrahara in south Bengaluru to Nagawara in the north, covering about 21.25 km with 18 stations. A large portion of the route is underground.

The corridor includes around 7.5 km of elevated track and a roughly 13.76-km underground section between Dairy Circle and Nagawara. The underground portion is one of the most significant parts of the project and has taken longer to complete.

Namma Metro: Will the full Pink Line open in September?

No. The September opening refers to the elevated Kalena Agrahara-Tavarekere section, not the entire Pink Line. The underground portion towards Nagawara is on a separate construction and commissioning timeline. Earlier deadlines for the complete corridor have been pushed several times, with officials now working towards completion of the remaining section at a later date.

This means commuters should not expect a direct Pink Line journey from Kalena Agrahara all the way to Nagawara when the first section opens.

Why the Pink Line matters for Bengaluru commuters

The first section is expected to improve public transport connectivity in parts of south Bengaluru where road traffic can be particularly heavy. For people travelling around Bannerghatta Road, IIM Bengaluru, JP Nagar and the surrounding areas, the new Metro service could provide an alternative to road travel. The Jayadeva Hospital interchange will also allow passengers to connect with the Yellow Line.

However, the immediate impact will depend on how well the new stations connect with buses, roads and other last-mile transport options. Reports have also highlighted concerns around feeder services, parking and pedestrian access at some stations.

For now, commuters should keep September 2026 in mind, but wait for the official announcement before making travel plans around the inauguration. The elevated section is ready. Trial runs have taken place. The remaining approvals are the key hurdle before passenger operations can begin.
