Rs 1 lakh salary in Bengaluru or Delhi? Techie explains where your savings could be higher
In a video, Sumit used the example of professionals being offered better pay in Bengaluru and compared that income with the costs they could face after relocating. His argument was that a salary increase can be substantially offset by higher living expenses.

Why a bigger Bengaluru package may shrink savings
Sumit said professionals considering a move to Bengaluru should look beyond the headline salary figure and calculate their likely annual expenses.“If you think in Bengaluru the salary is very good, then just hear me out. If you are living in Delhi, Noida or any other region of India part and you are thinking to move out from that region to Bengaluru for a good amount of salary, the salary is good there, but the cost of living is very high,” he said.
He pointed to rent and commuting as two major expenses and added that professionals living away from their families may also have to spend considerably on travelling home.
“Rent is very high. Travel expenses are very high. You might have to come back to your family very frequently, so you just have one option: to take a flight,” he said.
According to Sumit, a round-trip flight could cost around Rs 20,000. He estimated that rent, food and travel together could amount to roughly Rs 10 lakh a year.
Higher salary may not mean higher savings
Sumit used that estimate to make a broader point about relocation decisions. He argued that even if a professional receives an additional ₹10 lakh in annual compensation by moving to Bengaluru, the increase may not translate into equivalent savings if the person is currently living with family in Delhi.
“And even if you will get 10 lakh of rupees more in your package in Bengaluru, and you are living in Delhi with your family, then you will not be able to save that much amount of money because eventually you will spend 10 lakh of rupees in an year there itself,” he said.
The comparison was also extended to a ₹1 lakh monthly salary across Bengaluru, Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, with the post focusing on how the same income can result in different savings depending on where a person lives.
In the caption accompanying the video, Sumit framed the comparison around professionals deciding whether to switch jobs or relocate for higher compensation.
“₹1 Lakh salary in Bangalore vs Delhi vs Noida vs Gurgaon. Is ₹1 lakh salary really worth the same in every city? Your salary may be the same, but rent, food, transportation, lifestyle and monthly expenses can completely change how much you actually save,” he wrote.
He said the purpose of the comparison was to encourage people to consider actual savings rather than relying solely on CTC when evaluating a job opportunity.
The caption added that the comparison could be relevant to people planning to switch jobs, move cities, negotiate compensation or choose between Bengaluru, Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.

Social media users debate weigh in on Bengaluru vs Delhi-NCR
The post drew responses from users weighing Bengaluru’s employment opportunities against the expenses associated with living there.“Same salary, completely different lifestyle,” one user wrote.
Another said, “Delhi-NCR looks better for savings in many cases.”
A third commenter acknowledged Bengaluru’s employment prospects while also pointing to its costs, writing, “Bengaluru opportunities are great, but so are the expenses.”
Another user simply agreed with the central argument, commenting, “This is true.”
The discussion reflects a broader question for professionals comparing job offers across cities: whether a higher gross salary actually results in greater savings once housing, transport, food and travel costs are taken into account.
