Bengaluru new parking rules: Parking on road may cost car owners up to Rs 25,000 a year under proposed policy

Bengaluru residents may soon have to pay an annual fee of up to Rs 25,000 to park cars on residential roads under a draft parking policy issued by the Karnataka government. The proposed Greater Bengaluru Area (Parking) Rules, 2026 also include hourly charges for on-street parking on other roads, with car parking rates ranging from Rs 40 to Rs 80 an hour depending on the road category, a NDTV report stated.

Bengaluru residential parking charges

The draft rules propose annual parking permits for vehicles parked on residential roads. The fee would depend on the type of vehicle.

Small cars may attract an annual permit fee of Rs 15,000. The proposed charge for sedans is Rs 20,000 a year, while SUV owners may have to pay Rs 25,000 annually.

The proposal would introduce a fee for parking vehicles on residential roads, an area where motorists currently do not face such a structured annual charge under the proposed system.

Hourly parking charges on city roads

The draft policy also proposes hourly fees for non-residential on-street parking. The rates would depend on the category assigned to the road. For cars, the proposed rates are Rs 40 per hour on Category C roads, Rs 60 on Category B roads and Rs 80 on Category A roads. For two-wheelers, the hourly rates would be Rs 20 on Category C roads, Rs 30 on Category B roads and Rs 40 on Category A roads.

Off-street parking to cost less

The proposed charges for off-street parking would be lower than the rates for on-street parking. Cars could be charged between Rs 20 and Rs 40 an hour at off-street parking facilities. For two-wheelers, the proposed hourly fee would range from Rs 10 to Rs 20.

Monthly parking charges at these facilities are proposed at between Rs 1,000 and Rs 4,000. The draft also proposes a 50% discount on monthly parking rates for motorists using these facilities between 8 pm and 8 am.

Higher charges for longer parking

The proposed rules seek to discourage motorists from occupying road-side parking spaces for long periods. Under the draft policy, parking charges would increase when a vehicle remains parked for more than two hours. This is intended to limit extended use of on-street parking spaces and encourage motorists to use organised parking facilities.

Public can submit objections

The Urban Development Department issued the draft notification on August 11. The proposed rules are not final yet. Members of the public can submit objections and suggestions within 30 days from the date the notification is published in the Gazette.

If implemented, the policy would introduce a structured parking fee for residential roadside parking in Bengaluru while increasing the cost of longer-duration on-street parking. It would also make off-street facilities a relatively cheaper option for motorists.
