Bengaluru man says ‘Instagram addiction is very real’ after observing metro passengers at 5 am

A post shared by a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur has triggered a conversation on social media after he recounted what he noticed during an early morning metro journey. According to him, the atmosphere inside the metro coach highlighted how deeply social media has become embedded in people’s daily lives.

Early Morning Metro Ride Observation

In his post, Shetty mentioned that he had travelled to Udupi for a family function and returned to Bengaluru early in the morning. After reaching the city, he got down at Goraguntepalya station around 5 am and boarded the Bengaluru Metro from there.

Three Types of Passengers in the Coach

During the journey, Shetty said he observed the behaviour of passengers inside the metro compartment and noticed three different groups of people. According to him, nearly 10 percent of the passengers were trying to catch some sleep. Another 10 percent were either talking with their companions or quietly sitting without using their phones.

Majority Busy on Their Phones

Shetty further noted that around 80 percent of the passengers were focused on their smartphones. From their thumb movements, he inferred that many of them were scrolling through Instagram reels.

Reflection on Social Media Addiction

In the end, Shetty concluded that the experience made him realise that "Instagram addiction is very real" and that it demonstrates how social media is increasingly shaping people’s everyday habits and routines.
