Bengaluru flyovers restrictions: Check new rules for two-wheelers, autos and goods vehicles

Bengaluru Traffic Police will impose round-the-clock restrictions on two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws on the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor from September 4 and on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor from September 11.

The restrictions are part of an initiative to improve road safety and ease congestion on flyovers. They will initially be implemented on a trial basis, with the traffic police set to assess their impact before deciding on further action.

Electronics City corridor faces widest restrictions

The Electronics City Elevated Corridor will have the most extensive restrictions. Heavy, medium and light goods vehicles will be prohibited between 6am and 10pm, while two-wheelers, passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws will be banned round the clock.


Joint commissioner of police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy said the restrictions followed a detailed study of traffic movement, vehicle breakdowns and accidents, particularly those involving two-wheelers.

Reddy said fatal accidents were higher on the Electronics City flyover compared with other flyovers, although exact figures were not immediately available.

Airport Road flyover restrictions

On the International Airport Road Elevated Corridor, between Sanjeevnagar Cross and Vidyashilp Junction, two-wheelers and passenger autorickshaws will be prohibited 24 hours a day.

Goods vehicles of all categories will be restricted between 6am and 10pm.

Peenya corridor gets peak-hour curbs

The Peenya Elevated Corridor will prohibit passenger autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods autorickshaws round the clock.

Heavy and medium goods vehicles will be restricted from 7am to 11am and from 4pm to 10pm.

BGS, Double-Decker flyovers also covered

On the BGS Flyover on Mysuru Road, heavy goods vehicles will be banned throughout the day. Other goods vehicles, including three-wheeler goods autos, will face restrictions during the morning and evening peak hours.

The Double-Decker Flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda will prohibit heavy goods vehicles 24 hours a day.

Vehicle breakdowns among key concerns

Reddy said vehicle breakdowns, particularly those involving goods-carrying vehicles, were another concern across the flyovers.

“All flyovers witness breakdown of vehicles, especially goods-carrying vehicles. So, we have imposed these restrictions on a trial basis. Based on the results, we will take further decisions,” he said.

Safety, congestion considered

The traffic police said the review also considered flyover design and width, accident severity, congestion at entry and exit points, emergency traffic management, and the safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.

Restrictions begin from September 4

The restrictions on the BGS Flyover, Peenya Elevated Corridor, Double-Decker Flyover and International Airport Road Elevated Corridor will come into effect from September 4.

The restrictions on the Electronics City Elevated Corridor will begin from September 11.
