The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Kolkata, said strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to sustain thunderstorm activity across the state through June 12.
Thunderstorm activity likely in Kolkata and South Bengal
Kolkata and adjoining districts, including Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas, are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph over the coming days. The city may witness short but intense spells of rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Wind speeds could increase to 50-60 kmph during thunderstorm activity.
Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia, East Midnapore and West Midnapore are expected to witness the most significant thunderstorm activity in South Bengal. These districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall along with lightning and squally winds through the week. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.
North Bengal under heavy rainfall warning
North Bengal is expected to receive the heaviest rainfall during the forecast period. The IMD has issued a heavy rain warning for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts from June 7 onwards.Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly around June 8, raising the possibility of flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
Darjeeling and Kalimpong could also face landslides and road disruptions due to intense rainfall.
Weather systems driving rainfall activity
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to a seasonal trough extending across eastern India and upper-air cyclonic circulations over Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh.According to the IMD, the interaction between these systems and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal is creating favourable conditions for widespread thunderstorm development across the region.
Public advisory
The IMD has advised people to avoid open areas during lightning activity, seek shelter during thunderstorms and stay updated with local weather advisories.Fishermen have also been cautioned against venturing into the sea along the West Bengal coast due to squally winds and rough sea conditions.
