Bear attack in Tamil Nadu caught on camera, 3 injured

The bear attack happened on Sunday morning in the forest area near Kadayam where bears attack domestic animals occasionally but stay clear of humans.

Three men were seriously injured after they were attacked by a bear in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu, reports said Monday.

The attack happened on Sunday morning in the forest area near Kadayam where bears attack domestic animals occasionally but stay clear of humans.

The sloth bear was caught on camera pouncing on a man, a vegetable vendor who was out on his two wheeler, and trying to furiously bite his face as he lay on the ground. Those around could be heard screaming and trying to scare off the animal.

Two other men who rushed to his help were also attacked by the bear and seriously wounded, TOI reported

The three men were rescued by local residents and admitted to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Villagers later staged a road blockade in front of the Kadayam forest range office accusing officials of failing to maintain a solar fence and a trench dug to prevent wild animals from intruding into residential areas, the New Indian Express reported.

The report also said it was the second sloth bear attack in the region in less than a month.
