Banks, schools, colleges and offices holiday tomorrow: What's open and what's closed on November 9, a day after Diwali; check latest announcements.
Diwali celebrations may continue into Monday, November 9, 2026, but the holiday schedule will differ across states. While Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have announced an additional holiday, government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and Pune will also remain closed following separate Maharashtra government notifications.

However, November 9 is not a nationwide public holiday. Bank branches, private offices and schools will follow different schedules depending on their location and respective holiday calendars.

Here is what will remain open and closed on Monday.

Gujarat: Government offices to remain closed

The Gujarat government has declared November 9 a public holiday for state government offices to extend the Diwali break. Employees will get Monday off, while November 28 will be observed as a working day to compensate for the additional holiday.

The announcement covers state government offices. It should not be treated as an automatic holiday for every private company or institution.

Tamil Nadu: Schools, colleges and government offices closed

The Tamil Nadu government has declared November 9 a holiday for government offices, public sector undertakings, schools, colleges and other educational institutions across the state.

The decision was taken after students, parents, teachers and government employees requested an additional day off to travel to their hometowns for Deepavali, which falls on November 8.

November 28 will be a working Saturday to compensate for the additional holiday.

Maharashtra: Mumbai and Pune government offices get a local holiday

Maharashtra has not declared November 9 a statewide public holiday. However, government and semi-government offices in Pune district and Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts will remain closed.

The Pune administration shifted its local Diwali holiday from November 6 to November 9. Separately, the Maharashtra government issued a November 6 circular declaring a local holiday for state government and semi-government offices in Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts.

Are banks open or closed on November 9?

Bank customers should check the Reserve Bank of India's city-wise holiday calendar before visiting a branch.

The RBI's November 2026 calendar lists November 10, Bali Pratipada, as a bank holiday in Mumbai. November 9 is not listed as a bank holiday for Mumbai, so branches are scheduled to remain open.

The additional government office holidays in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra should not automatically be treated as bank holidays.

UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATM services are generally available even when physical bank branches are closed.

What about private offices?

Private companies are not automatically required to follow every additional state government office holiday announcement.

Employees should check their company's holiday calendar or confirm with their HR department. The November 9 announcements in the states mentioned above primarily cover the government offices and institutions specified in the respective orders.
