Amid a series of attacks targeting minorities in Bangladesh, a businessman has become the latest victim of a brutal assault in Damudya, Shariatpur district. Khokon Chandra Das (50) was severely injured after being attacked, hacked, and set on fire by unidentified assailants on Wednesday night. He has since been shifted to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.

The incident occurred around 9:30 pm near Keurbhanga Bazaar in Koneshwar Union of Damudya Upazila. Khokon, who runs a medicine shop and a mobile banking business, was returning home in an autorickshaw after closing his shop when the attackers intercepted the vehicle on the Damudya–Shariatpur road, according to officials.

The assailants allegedly stopped the vehicle, assaulted him, and then attacked him with sharp weapons. They later poured petrol on him and set him on fire.

In a desperate attempt to save his life, Khokon reportedly jumped into a nearby pond. Hearing screams from nearby residents, the attackers fled the scene, eyewitnesses said.

Locals rushed Khokon to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, where doctors referred him to Dhaka due to the severity of his injuries. Medical officials confirmed that he suffered multiple injuries across his body.

Khokon’s wife, Seema Das, said her husband was able to identify two of the attackers. “We have no disputes with anyone. We do not understand why he was targeted.”
