Bangladesh crisis: One protestor steals Sheik Hasina's sarees from residence, says going to make wife the PM

As angry protestors vandalise the official residence of Bangladesh's now-former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, one person took a bag full of the former Prime Minister's saree. The protests which lasted for weeks resulted in hundreds of deaths in Bangladesh with curfews being imposed and the internet being restricted.

A viral video on social media showed a man with a bag on his head. When inquired, he said it contained Sheikh Hasina's saree. The man doubled down on his remarks and claimed that he would give the sarees to his wife, and make her the PM.

"I am going to make my wife the PM," he said.

Protests and incidents of vandalism were reported from the streets of Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday, a day when Sheik Hasina tendered her resignation and left the country amidst weeks of student-led protests that escalated into violence. Visuals aired on TV, local media and social media platforms showed people ransacking Sheikh Hasina's official residence and taking away eatables.

The protests majorly by students demanded an end to a quota system for government jobs and had grown into an uprising against Hasina and her ruling Awami League party. Bangladeshi leader Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule ended on Monday as she fled more than a month of deadly protests and the military announced it would form an interim government.

Hasina had sought to quell nationwide protests against her government since early July but she fled the country after brutal unrest on Sunday in which nearly 100 people were killed.
