In one of the biggest hydroponic ganja busts in recent times, a woman passenger was caught at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport with over 40 kg of high-quality cannabis hidden in her luggage. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) confirmed that the seized contraband is worth around Rs 14 crore in the illegal market, according to TOI.

NCB officials revealed that the accused woman had flown from Mumbai to Bangkok, where she received two check-in bags packed with hydroponic ganja.

To throw off authorities, she routed her return journey via Dubai and landed in Hyderabad on an Emirates flight around 3.30 am on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, NCB officers intercepted her at the airport.

“She had packed 40.2 kg of hydroponic ganja in her luggage. This is one of the largest seizures of its kind coming from Thailand,” an NCB official told TOI.

Officials said there has been a steady rise in the number of passengers trying to bring in hydroponic cannabis from Bangkok. So far, 12 such passengers have been caught at RGI Airport, but their hauls were smaller. This latest case marks a significant jump in scale.

Preliminary investigations suggest the woman was waiting for instructions from her accomplices in India, who were likely to collect the consignment and move it to Mumbai.

The NCB is now working to identify the larger syndicate involved by investigating both the supply chain in Thailand and the network in India. Officials have stepped up surveillance on passengers arriving from Bangkok.

To help crack down on narcotics, NCB has urged the public to report any suspicious activity. Citizens can call the toll-free MANAS helpline at 1933. The identity of callers will be kept strictly confidential.
