US strikes Venezuela, captures Maduro
On January 3, 2026, US President Trump announced that the US military had launched strikes across Venezuela that culminated in the capture and arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in an operation. Trump vowed to "run the country" until there is a "proper" transition of power. Trump also promised US oil companies would move into the country and warned the US would stage a second attack if needed. The real reason why Maduro was deposed lies in oil and petro-dollars. Venezuela, at 303 billion barrels (BB), has the world’s largest proven oil reserves.Trump threatens to annex Columbia, Greenland
Donald Trump has suggested that US could take action against other countries after its attack on Venezuela. He threatened Colombia and its president, described Cuba as “ready to fall” and reasserted his desire to take control of Greenland. On Air Force One, Trump told reporters that Colombia was being “run by a sick man who likes making cocaine and selling it to the United States." “He’s not going to be doing it for very long,” he said of Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro, who has frequently criticized Trump. “He has cocaine mills and cocaine factories.” Asked whether his administration would carry out an operation targeting Colombia, Trump replied, “It sounds good to me.”"We need Greenland from a national security situation. It's so strategic. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place," he said. "We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security." "Denmark is not going to be able to do it, I can tell you," Mr. Trump continued. "To boost up security in Greenland, they added one more dogsled." Trump also suggested that the United States could take action against a number of other countries, including Mexico and Iran, over a range of issues.
Reacting to Trump's statement, the Danish defence ministry said that soldiers will be required to shoot first and ask questions later if the United States invades Greenland. This is in accordance with the army's rule of engagement from 1952 that requires soldiers to attack invaders without waiting for orders from higher-ups.

US seizes two Venezuela-linked oil tankers
Days after the ouster of Maduro, the US seized two oil tankers linked to Venezuela in the Atlantic and Caribbean, including one vessel that had been operating under the Russian flag. The US forces have intensified a naval blockade aimed at sanctioned ships carrying or attempting to carry Venezuelan crude. The move follows closely on the heels of a dramatic operation in Caracas in which US special forces captured President Nicolás Maduro. In the North Atlantic, the Russian-flagged tanker Marinera—formerly known as Bella 1—was intercepted early Wednesday after a weeks-long pursuit. The vessel was boarded by the US Coast Guard and military under a federal court warrant for suspected sanctions violations.
A second tanker, the Panama-flagged M/S Sophia, was also boarded and taken into US custody in the Caribbean Sea. US authorities said both ships had either recently docked in Venezuela or were en route there and were under sanctions for illicit activities linked to Venezuelan oil shipments.

Protests in Iran
Frustration over the collapse of Iran's currency has triggered demonstrations in more than 100 cities and towns across all 31 of Iran's provinces, according to human rights groups. On Thursday, Iran was plunged into a nationwide internet blackout as anti-government protests ripped the country. Videos on social media show Iranians shouting slogans against the ruling theocratic regime as anger has mounted over economic turmoil and security crackdowns. At least 45 protesters, including eight children, have been killed since demonstrations began, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights NGO (IHRNGO) reported Thursday. It said hundreds more have been injured and over 2,000 people detained.Footage verified by CNN showed mass protests in cities across Iran, with demonstrators blocking roads and setting fires in the streets of the capital. In the videos, opposing factions demonstrating across the country rallied around chants in support of and opposition to the Iranian government. Trump has warned Iran's authorities against killing peaceful protesters, saying Washington "will come to their rescue". “If they start killing people like they have in the past, I think they’re going to get hit very hard by the United States,” Trump told reporters Sunday.
Saudi Arabia-UAE clash
Saudi Arabia and the UAE, previously allies in Yemen, are now divided over territorial control, with the UAE backing the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC). The STC seeks southern independence, but Saudi Arabia, wanting a unified Yemen, views the STC's actions as UAE interference and has retaken most seized territory. These developments across the globe, particularly in Latin America and Middle East, have ignited debates whether we are heading for World War III.The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
