Avatar: The Way of Water secured a massive opening in India. The James Cameron-directed visual extravaganza collected around Rs 130 crore during the weekend, with the first, second and third days collecting 41, 42, and 46 crore rupees.

However, as per the Pinkvilla report, Avatar 2 witnessed a massive drop on Monday, with the film collecting only Rs 21 crore, a more than 50% drop. But the collection will again see a massive rise with the Christmas and New Year holidays around the corner, the report added.

Avatar 2 follows the story of Jake Sully, a paraplegic marine played by Worthington. In their fight for survival, he becomes an unlikely champion for the blue-skinned, 10-foot-tall sapient humanoids called the Na’vi. In this sequel to Avatar, Sully and Neytiri, played by actress Zoe Saldana, do everything in their power to keep their family together.

Avatar was a colossal success at the box office. It raised over 2 billion dollars at the box office and was Cameron’s second movie to do so after the Titanic movie. At present, Avatar is the highest-grossing movie of all time, but if adjusted for inflation, it’s the second highest-grossing movie of all time, the first being the 1939 movie 'Gone with the Wind'.

James Cameron said during the promotion of Avatar 2 that just to break even, the film needs to turn into one of the highest-grossing movies (third or fourth). The director even mentioned to GQ how he informed 20th Century Studio, the film's production company, that this movie Avatar: The Way of Water is “the worst business case” when the history of movies is concerned.

He added that the film has to be the “third or fourth highest-grossing film” in the history of movies, and that’s just for it to break-even point. As per a different interview given by the director, the possibility of whether Avatar 4 or Avatar 5 will take place will depend upon the success of Avatar: The Way of Water. Otherwise, the franchise will be wrapped after Avatar 3, set to be released in 2024.
