Australian spinner Todd Murphy impressed cricket lovers on his test debut, while claiming 7 wickets in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy match at Nagpur's VCA Stadium.

Murphy also made history by taking five wickets on his Test debut, being the youngest Australian to do so.

Murphy had the second best numbers for an Australian debutant in India, trailing only Jason Krejza, who had 8 wickets at the same venue in November 2008.


KL Rahul became Murphy’s first Test wicket when the off-spinner tossed up a delivery from around the wicket, which Rahul flicked straight at Murphy, who held on to take his maiden Test wicket.

On Day 2, the 22-year-old finally broke through when he took the wicket of night watchman Ravichandran Ashwin. The debutant then removed Cheteshwar Pujara for 7 runs off 14 balls.

He then claimed his most significant Test wicket, dismissing former India captain Virat Kohli for 12 runs. His next victim was KS Bharat, who fell for a duck as the debutant completed his five-wicket haul.

Murphy dismissed the dangerous Ravindra Jadeja on Day 3 and then subsequently dismissed Mohammad Shami, who had earlier struck Murphy for back-to-back sixes.

In the first Test of the four-match series, India defeated Australia by an innings and 132 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin got five wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami each took two as India bowled Australia out for 91 runs in their second innings. The second Test will begin on Friday February 17, in Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi.
