Innovative ways of reducing expenses are not a rare occurrence – most of us are finding ways to cut it, but a man from Batemans Bay in New South Wales, Australia has devised a truly remarkable method. Martin Bongiorno fell behind on his electricity bill payments by AUD 2,000 (about Rs 1,11,000) and as a result, decided to reduce his electricity consumption. His unique approach involves using only one light bulb that he carries with him from room to room.

According to Martin Bongiorno, he has positioned a single lamp in the centre of his home and when he needs to move from one room to another, he simply takes out the light bulb and carries it with him. As a single father, Bongiorno has found various ways to keep his expenses low, such as taking cold showers when it's dark and buying food that doesn't require cooking, like raw vegetables or canned goods.

Martin Bongiorno, as a delivery driver, had to rely on compensation payments after a workplace accident the previous year. This experience prompted him to become strict with his budget, allocating AUD 15 (Rs 833.60) per day for food and AUD 20 (Rs 1,111.47) per week for his energy bill.

However, inflation has made it difficult for him to sustain his minimalistic lifestyle. The cost of living has increased globally, including in Australia, where inflation hit a 32-year high of 7.8 per cent last year. Although it has decreased slightly this year, it remains high at 7 per cent, leading to higher prices for essential goods like food and fuel.

The Australian government has announced an AUD 15 billion cost-of-living package in its recent budget to help those struggling with inflation. This includes increased rent assistance and single-parent payments. However, the government warns of tough times ahead, with electricity prices expected to rise by 10% and gas prices by 4% in the coming financial year.
