Om Prakash Bishnoi
An astrologer and social media influencer known for claiming he can predict people’s futures has failed to win over voters in his own village, securing just 33 votes in a sarpanch election in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district. Omprakash Bishnoi, who has more than two million followers across social media platforms, contested the election from Indon Ki Dhani-II gram panchayat in Osian tehsil but received little support from local voters.

Bishnoi’s electoral performance stood in sharp contrast to his online popularity. He has more than 1.4 million followers on Instagram, 232,000 on Facebook and around 550,000 YouTube subscribers. He is also the president of a local cow shelter and was contesting from his native gram panchayat, factors that he appeared to believe would help his campaign.

However, the influencer received only 33 votes in a village with around 1,600 eligible voters. The result drew attention online, with users pointing to the irony of someone who claims to predict other people’s fortunes being unable to foresee his own electoral setback.

Influencer acknowledges election result

After the results were announced, Bishnoi took to his official social media accounts to thank voters in his native village and accept their decision.

He referred to the Hindi saying, “There is darkness beneath the lamp”, acknowledging the contrast between his substantial digital following and his limited support among voters at home.

The result highlights how an online audience does not necessarily translate into electoral support, particularly in local elections where voters make decisions at the community level.
