The actor was born on September 3, 1942, in Kolibri, Tezpurin, Assam. He completed his primary education from Kolibri LP School . His parents were part of the entertainment industry. His mother was a famous singer, and his father was also an actor.
He graduated from the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) alongside prominent film industry veterans. Shubhash Ghai and Shatrughan Sinha were his batchmates during his studies period at the FTII.
