The Asian Games 2026 will officially begin on Saturday, September 19, with the opening ceremony scheduled at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya.

The 20th edition of the continental multi-sport event will bring together athletes from 45 countries and regions across 43 sports. Japan will host the Asian Games for the third time, after previously staging the event in Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.

The Asian Games 2026 will be available for live streaming on SonyLIV in India. Television coverage will be provided by Sony Sports 1, Sony Sports 2 and Sony Sports 5.

India’s title defence in cricket, kabaddi and hockey

India will aim to retain its men's and women's titles in cricket and kabaddi. The Indian men's hockey team will also enter the competition as defending champions.

In men's T20 cricket, Shreyas Iyer will captain India as the team looks to retain its title. Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has also been named in the squad. The Indian women's cricket team will be led by T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur.

Hockey offers LA 2028 Olympic qualification opportunity

The hockey competitions in Aichi-Nagoya will have additional importance, as both the men's and women's tournaments will act as continental qualification events for the LA 2028 Olympics.

India will also have Olympic qualification opportunities in several other sports, including archery, sailing, squash, surfing and tennis.

India’s Olympic medallists at Asian Games 2026

Although defending javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from the Asian Games due to an ankle injury, India will still have five individual Olympic medallists competing at the event.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will headline India's badminton campaign, while Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu will lead the weightlifting contingent.

In shooting, Manu Bhaker will be among India's prominent competitors, while Aman Sehrawat will represent the country in wrestling. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain will also be one of India's leading athletes at the Games.
