The protestors gathered at the President's official residence from across the country. They raided the bedroom, swimming pool, and the kitchen. Slogans like, "Gota go home", were heard. Gota is the shortened version of President Rajapaksa's first name.
The President was reportedly escorted to a safe place hours before the protestors broke into his official residence. He was moved to the Army headquarters following an intelligence report suggesting that the ongoing situation may become grim and uncontrollable.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that he has agreed to resign. This happened after Lanka's Parliament leaders demanded from both Prime Minister and President step down after protesters stormed the President's residence.
The 22 million people of Sri Lanka have suffered for months from acute food and fuel shortages and inflation mainly caused by the chronic mismanagement of the country's finances.
