‘Ariyippu’ Director Mahesh Narayanan says, “Certain films are meant only for the digital platform, where you can pause, go into the details”
Ariyippu directed by Mahesh Narayanan is set to stream on Netflix from today. The film has received a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDB.

While speaking at a program ‘Table Talks’ during International Film Festival of India, Narayanan emphasised on the fact that earlier independent film-makers didn’t have much choice to broadcast their films other than Doordarshan, but now there are several platforms for the same. “ One way or another, the film maker can exist through these platforms. But every platform won't accept every film. That depends a lot on the kind of actors they have, the kind of feasibility they get in through in terms of financing and budgeting,” he said.
He is being quizzed about the release of the film on OTT platform and not in theatres and answered that as a filmmaker he believes that one should have the platform to work in both the mediums. “If you’re making a film for theatre, people need a certain kind of a USP to come inside. But certain films are meant only for the digital platform, where you can pause, go into the details, rewind and watch it again,” Narayanan added.
Narayanan in an interview said that the idea behind Ariyippu was that while there were restrictions during the pandemic, he had to adapt to different ways of filmmaking and that’s when he says the film happened. “This one is also set during the pandemic, it’s about labourers from Kerala trying to migrate. Most of my stories have got this migration angle. I knew this film was for a platform and not for theatre, so I had that liberty to conceptualise and make it honest from my end,” Narayanan added.
The film has received a rating of 7 out of 10 on IMDB and is available on Netflix.
