Arijit Singh speaks out for first time about ‘Gerua’ controversy

Arijit Singh recently spoke up for the first time on the ‘Gerua’ controversy. The incident occurred in 2022 at the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

Though Arijit Singh never commented on the topic at the time, he finally addressed it for the first time on Sunday, February 19, during a concert in Kolkata. He stated, “It's remarkable that there's so much debate over a colour. Would there be a fuss if Swami ji wore white as well?”

Arijit was asked to sing a song by CM Mamata Banerjee and the audience last year. He complied with the tune ‘Gerua’. The song came from the film ‘Dilwale’, starring Shah Rukh Khan. Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Prosenjit, Rani Mukerji, Shatabdi Roy, Arijit Singh, Babul Supriyo, and other celebrities attended the event.


Days later, it was announced that Arijit Singh’s concert, slated for February 18, 2023, had been cancelled. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) clashed, with the BJP accusing Mamata Banerjee of being offended by Arijit Singh’s choice of song ‘Gerua’ at the event.

Nevertheless, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim later confirmed that Arijit Singh’s performance was denied owing to the G20 event, which was also scheduled in the same region, and had nothing to do with the song.
