Will banks remain closed on Gandhi Jayanti?
Yes. October 2 is a national holiday observed as Gandhi Jayanti, and bank branches will remain closed on the day.The holiday applies to banks operating across India, including State Bank of India and other public sector banks, private banks, foreign banks and cooperative banks. The Department of Financial Services lists SBI among India’s 12 public sector banks.
October 2 falls on a Friday this year, making it a weekday bank holiday.

Why are banks closed on October 2?
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on the same date in 1869.The day is observed as a national holiday in India. It is also recognised internationally by the United Nations as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Can customers use online banking on October 2?
Although physical bank branches will be shut, customers can continue to use several electronic banking facilities.NEFT and RTGS are available round the clock throughout the year, including weekends and bank holidays, according to the Reserve Bank of India.
Customers can therefore continue to make electronic fund transfers through their bank’s digital channels. UPI and mobile and internet banking services can also be used through participating banks and payment apps.
What about ATMs on Gandhi Jayanti?
ATMs will generally remain available for customers even when bank branches are closed. Customers can use them for cash withdrawals and other services supported by their bank and the particular ATM.Cash availability, however, can depend on the individual machine and replenishment schedules.
SBI and other public sector banks
State Bank of India and the other public sector banks will also observe the October 2 bank holiday.India currently has 12 public sector banks, including SBI, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India.
Customers who need branch-based services such as certain account-related requests, document submission or other in-person transactions should therefore plan them around the holiday.
