Apple Inc. is set to include a USB Type-C port in its upcoming iPhones, following an order from the European Union (EU) to include the new port in its charging mechanism. However, there could be a major twist as recent rumours suggest that the company may introduce a custom USB Type-C port exclusively for iPhones.
Apple has confirmed that it will comply with the EU directive, but the company may not make it so simple after all. The new report, published on Weibo, China's Twitter alternative, reveals that Apple could add a custom integrated circuit (IC) chip to its USB-C port, similar to the authentication process in the lightning port. This could mean that non-Apple accessories may not work as well as "authentic" accessories and fast charging and high-speed data transfer may be limited.

Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, stated at The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference in October that the company will have no choice but to comply with the EU directive. It remains unclear what the exact implications of the custom IC chip will be and if the EU will intervene if this goes against the purpose of the USB-C being a universal interface.
