Apple is finally preparing to launch its touch-screen Macs and rumours suggest that they will have “major changes” in the interface, including the iPhone’s Dynamic Island feature.

According to the report, the initial touch 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to release towards the end of 2026 — around October-November. The laptops are said to feature OLED displays and include the Dynamic Island at the centre top of the screen.

The Dynamic Island, first introduced on the iPhone in 2022, is essentially a camera cutout that displays alerts such as media controls, app notifications and more. On the Mac, Bloomberg says, it will be built around a smaller hole-punch camera cutout, rather than the current notch design.

Bloomberg reported that while Apple plans to unveil new Mac updates in early March, the touch-screen MacBook Pros will not be part of that rollout.

Despite adding touch capabilities, Apple is not expected to position the MacBook Pro as an iPad replacement or market it as a touch-first device. Instead, the idea is to let users combine touch input with the traditional keyboard and trackpad experience.

The refreshed interface is expected to adapt based on how the device is being used. If a user taps a control, menus may expand or shift to make touch interaction easier. Features such as emoji pickers and control center sliders are also likely to be optimised for touch.

The report noted that Apple’s macOS Tahoe redesign last year, which introduced elements such as increased spacing around icons and touch-optimised sliders, helped lay the groundwork for the shift.

The move marks a significant change in strategy for Apple, which has long resisted touch-screen laptops. Co-founder Steve Jobs once described touch laptops as “ergonomically terrible,” and in 2021 hardware chief John Ternus said the company already offered the “best touch computer” in the iPad.

Still, with touch screens now common on Windows laptops and Apple increasingly unifying apps across devices, the company appears ready to rethink its stance.
