Annular solar eclipse 2026
Skywatchers are in for a striking celestial show this February as the first major astronomical event of 2026, an annular solar eclipse, popularly known as the ‘ring of fire’, takes place on Tuesday, February 17.

But here’s the big question many in India are asking: will we get to see it?

Sadly, most Indians will have to sit this one out, as the eclipse will largely miss the country. Still, it remains an exciting global event for astronomy lovers.

Let’s break down everything you need to know.

When will the annular solar eclipse occur?

The annular solar eclipse will begin on February 17 at 07:01 UTC, which translates to 12:31 pm IST.

The eclipse will progress over remote parts of the globe and will mainly be visible from Antarctica and nearby regions.

Will the ‘ring of fire’ be visible in India?

No, the annular solar eclipse will not be visible from India.

The event is expected to go completely unseen across most of Asia, including India. So unfortunately, there will be no partial or full phases visible in the country this time.

Where will the eclipse be visible?

This eclipse has a very limited visibility zone.

It will be seen:

  • Mainly from Antarctica
  • After sunrise in parts of Argentina
  • Some areas of South Africa

Because the path mostly crosses isolated regions, only a small number of observers, mostly scientists stationed in Antarctica, will get a clear view of the ‘ring of fire’.

What exactly is an annular solar eclipse?

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves in front of the Sun but does not completely cover it.

Unlike a total solar eclipse, the Moon appears slightly smaller because it is near apogee (its farthest point from Earth). As a result, a bright circle of sunlight remains visible around the Moon.

This glowing edge forms the dramatic ‘ring of fire’ effect.

Typically:
Up to 96% of the Sun’s centre is covered
The ring can last for around 2 minutes and 20 seconds

Is it safe to watch an annular solar eclipse with the naked eye?

No, and this is important.

Even though it looks spectacular, never look directly at the Sun during an annular eclipse without protection.

Safe viewing tips:
  • Use certified eclipse glasses
  • Use solar filters on telescopes or cameras
  • Avoid sunglasses or regular glasses (they are not safe)

Direct exposure can cause permanent eye damage.

When is the next solar or lunar eclipse?

If you miss this one, don’t worry, more eclipses are on the way.

Here’s what’s coming:
  • Two weeks later: A total lunar eclipse, visible across North America
  • February 2027: Next annular solar eclipse visible from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and parts of West Africa
  • 2028: Annular eclipse visible from South America and Spain
  • 2030: Annular eclipse across parts of Europe and Asia

Indian skywatchers will have better chances with future events.

Why are annular eclipses called the ‘ring of fire’?

The name comes from the thin, blazing circle of sunlight that remains around the Moon.

It looks like a glowing halo or a fiery ring, making it one of the most photogenic and dramatic sky events.

While India won’t witness the February 17 annular solar eclipse, the event still marks an exciting start to the year for astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. Keep an eye on upcoming eclipse dates, your chance to see one live might be just around the corner.

After all, the sky always has another show planned.
