In a post on social media network X, formerly Twitter, Warikoo said he made a 'horrible mistake' in his earlier tweet where he made fun of Shaw's phsique.
"I realize my mistake after people's responses. This pic is Prithvi Shaw's who lost his mother at the age of 4. Which makes my post extremely insensitive and not something I am proud of. In an attempt to invoke my mom's natural reaction to my fitness levels in my 20s, I made a horrible mistake," Warikoo wrote.
Tagging the cricketer, he added: "I do not expect you to read this or least of all forgive me. But it is my responsibility to apologize for this. I am truly sorry."
"For clarification - I do not follow cricket actively, so I was not aware of Prithvi (beyond his name). Would have acted differently was I aware of him and his history," Warikoo said.
Warikoo also attached his earlier tweet in which he made fun of Shaw. "Bet his mom thinks "patla ho gaya hai," he said in a tweet on August 10.
Many netizens have lauded Warikoo for his apology.
"This requires courage, man, setting up nice example for next gen of influencers. Fine to make mistake, fine to apologise. Nothing makes you bigger or smaller," said one.
Many, while hailing Warikoo, also pointed out that his earlier tweet was highly insensitive. "Your comment was highly insensitive at that point. But on seeing this, you do look genuinely sorry for your comment and actions, which is okay. Next time onwards, please think and research well before making a comment on social media, as it can hurt feelings of various people," said another.
The talented 23-year-old has been out of contention in India for the last two years. He last played for the Men in Blue on the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021.
