The Thames Valley Police, which oversees areas west of London including Mountbatten-Windsor’s former residence, said it is assessing allegations that he shared trade-related information with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in 2010.
Under UK law, police did not officially identify Mountbatten-Windsor by name. However, when asked directly, the force referred to a statement confirming that a man in his sixties had been arrested.
“Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office,” the statement said. “It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to examine this alleged offence.”
Who is Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor?
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is a former British prince and member of the Royal Family. Incidentally, he is the great-nephew of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was the last Viceroy of British India. He has faced long-standing controversy over his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers, alleged in her memoir that Epstein forced her to have sex with Andrew on three occasions. She claimed one of these incidents occurred when she was 17. Giuffre died by suicide in April.
On October 17, Andrew announced that he was stepping back from his titles. He said that after discussions with The King and other family members, they had agreed that the ongoing allegations were distracting from the work of the monarch and the Royal Family. He added that he chose to prioritise his duty to his family and country.
Mountbatten-Windsor’s name appears hundreds of times in recently released documents, including Epstein’s private emails. These reportedly include invitations for Epstein to visit Buckingham Palace, Epstein’s offer to introduce him to a Russian woman, and photographs showing him with an unidentified woman.
Royal career and fall from grace
Before the controversy, Andrew enjoyed a prominent public profile. He served in the Royal Navy for 22 years and was appointed the UK’s Special Representative for Trade and Investment in 2001. However, he stepped down from the role in 2011 due to growing scrutiny over his links to Epstein. His 1986 marriage to Sarah Ferguson attracted intense media attention. Although they separated in 1992, they remained on friendly terms and continued to share a close relationship.
After leaving the Navy, Andrew became known for his lavish lifestyle and frequent international travel, earning the nickname “Air Miles Andy.” However, his association with Epstein, who was convicted of sex offences involving minors in 2008, severely damaged his reputation.
In 2019, Andrew gave a widely criticised BBC interview in an attempt to address the allegations, but it further intensified public backlash and marked a major turning point in his public life.
